Chalenam Rhythms will be performing at the Protest Arts International Festival. The festival brings together - from around the globe - academics, artists, funders, students, artists, journalist, government and others to share experiences and strategies in the development and distribution of protest artworks.

The festival comprises of performances, workshops, conferences, film screenings and exhibitions. PAIF disciplines currently includes; theatre, music, poetry, dance, film, visual art.

We know in this year’s Music discipline there is a new performance that will take this festival to the next level –CHALENAM RHYTHMS!!!

A renowned vocalist and percussionist, who has performed with Oliver Mtukudzi at various local, regional and international platforms. Peggy has been part of various studio sessions both locally and internationally and has valuable experience. She is also talented in vocal and percussion coaching for upcoming artists.

Namatayi's passion for music

Namatayi followed up in 2003 with her passion to sing by joining the Black Spirits led by the multi award winning music icon, Oliver Mtukudzi and performed with him for seven years. Her skills in both singing and playing traditional instruments received critical acclaim nationwide and made her a respectable and noted artist in a very short amount of time when she was with Oliver. Namatayi and her husband Charles Chipanga had over the years become permanent features in the Black Spirits line-up until late 2011 when the duo decided to turn solo and form Chalenam Rhythms. This move has made Namatayi grow as an artist of her own by featuring on her husband’s album Prayer Expose (Namatayi) with the song Gore Rangu.

Charles

Charles Chipanga being the co-founder is a debonair multi talented marimba maestro with a distinct wide ranged voice and possesses an aggressive musicality and a go getter chivalry that has seen him play in the shadow of the multi award winning Tuku music giant. Having mastered many instruments through formal and self training. Famed for his mastery of the Marimba, Charles boasts of the unique capability to play any instrument that is laid before him, all with equal verve and ability. He also is also famed for his musicology in dance that is characterized by immense panache and dignity.

Charles studied at Zimbabwe College of Music for a certificate in Ethnomusicology. He is also one of the pioneer members of Umoja Cultural flying Carpet. It is then that he became part of a greater league of artistes, mixing with professionals and becoming a musical guru of note himself. He took a leaf from the lecturers and developed a passion to impart his knowledge upon others too. It is a central theme in the life of a selfless young chap who feels he has to help wherever and whenever he can. Charles is a philanthropist that way.

Nam Nam

Namatayi started singing when she was in Primary school. After completing her education she went for vocal training at St George’s College.

The singer and cango player came onto the national music scene in 2002 when she worked with Ernst Tanga Wekwa Sando, before working on collaborations with Africa Revenge and Prudence Katomeni.

She followed up in 2003 with her passion to sing by joining the Black Spirits led by the multi award winning music icon, Oliver Mtukudzi and performed with him for seven years.
